Justine Bateman Creates a CREDO23 Stamp that Identifies All-Union and Non-AI Film & TV

The CREDO23 Stamp, awarded by a group of Film & TV professionals, helps audiences identify productions made without AI.

Justine Bateman, a writer/ director/ producer, created the CREDO23 Stamp, to identify works that did not employ any generative artificial intelligence technologies. Bateman hopes CREDO23 will help filmmakers differentiate their hard work that was “sweated and bled over”.

The stamp is a pledge that the project was fully created by humans that is based on filmmakers’ individual applications for each project. The submission is reviewed by the CREDO23 Council, comprised of film and series professionals such as Reed Morano (Director, HANDMAID’S TALE), Matt Weiner (Producer, MAD MEN), Arianne Phillips (Costume Designer, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD), and Juliette Lewis (Actor, YELLOW JACKETS).

With the vision and mission of preserving artists’ visions, the CREDO23 council requires the applying filmmakers to follow three main rules:

  1. No artificial intelligence, including but not limited to generative AI, is used in the project;

  2. Minimum CGI and VFX is used, and only for minor fix or creation;

  3. The project is all-union work.

While CREDO23 is voluntary and identifies work created without AI, the European Union has proposed an AI Act to legally require transparency from creators and companies about any use of AI in content creation. As AI becomes more mainstream in content creation, consumers, and regulators, may demand more transparency.
