New AI-powered Streaming Service Allows Viewers to Create Shows
Fable Studio introduces Showrunner, a streaming platform that lets users create and customize their own animated episodes using advanced AI technology.
Fable Studio has launched a new streaming platform that challenges traditional content creation boundaries by integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI). The San Francisco-based Emmy-winning startup made headlines previously with an AI-generated episode of 'South Park,' which was met with mixed reviews. The company has introduced Showrunner, a service that enables users to design their own episodes from just a simple prompt.
Showrunner allows viewers to take on the role of creator, offering tools to manipulate dialogue, characters, and shot types. This represents a significant step towards more interactive forms of media consumption, where users can not only watch AI-generated series but also craft their own unique content.
Edward Saatchi, CEO of Fable, envisions Showrunner as a sort of “Netflix for AI,” where viewers could finish watching a series and then immediately create a new episode tailored to their preferences. This concept could redefine audience engagement, offering an unprecedented level of control and personalization.
The technology currently supports animation only, with no capability for live-action content creation. As part of its launch, Showrunner unveiled ten animated shows ranging from a satire on Silicon Valley, Exit Valley, to a dark horror anime about post-apocalyptic survivors, Ikiru Shinu.
Users who create compelling episodes can see their work featured in the official series catalog, with financial incentives and potential revenue sharing if their creations are picked up by other streaming services.
While this model of user-generated content holds promise for reducing production costs and democratizing media creation, it also stirs apprehensions among traditional creators about the devaluation of professional content creation roles. The use of AI in content creation has been a subject of debate, particularly with concerns about the potential replacement of human creators and the ethical implications of using copyrighted materials without proper attribution.
Amidst questions about the evolving intersection of technology and creativity in Hollywood, union protections and the ethical deployment of AI in the creative industries will likely become even more critical as platforms like Showrunner rise and gain traction.
